7 Ways to Step up Your Blogging Game

Poor conversion rates? Few sales? Little traffic? It's time to transform your blogging strategy. Making a few changes to the type of content you post — and how often you post it — could boost your sales and search rankings. Here are seven ways to step up your blogging game.

1. UPDATE OLD POSTS

Outdated blog content still holds value. Not only is it quicker to update an old post than to create a new one, but the search engines love updated content.

Identify your top-performing posts, and consider the relevance of this content. You can make a few changes — refresh old statistics, modernize the layout, add some new developments, etc. — and repurpose and republish your posts for a whole new audience.

2. CREATE NEW CONTENT

Sometimes, brand spankin' new content works better. Google measures "freshness" when indexing your pages. Relevant, up-to-date information could see your search rankings skyrocket, so keep blogging.

Create a blog posting schedule — and stick to it. Try to blog as frequently as you can, whether that's once, twice or thrice a week. This can help you build a following and encourage more people to visit your pages.

3. GUEST BLOG

Guest blogging serves two purposes: It builds your domain authority and increases your online exposure. Find a blog in your niche that has a steady flow of traffic. Then, ask the owner whether you can create a blog post for his site.

Don't forget to include a link back to your site in your guest blog. This way, readers who enjoy your content can check out your site.

4. SHARE YOUR CONTENT ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Sharing your blog posts on social media promotes your content to a far-reaching audience. Posting visual content proves particularly beneficial. Infographics, for example, are shared and liked three times more on social media than other types of graphics.

Social media sharing works. Ninety-four percent of B2B marketers already use LinkedIn as part of their content strategy; 87 percent use Twitter; and 84 post on Facebook. Always include your social media handles at the bottom of your blog posts too.

5. ASK INFLUENCERS TO WRITE FOR YOU

Think of this as a kind of reverse guest blogging, where influencers create content for your site. Asking an authority figure in your niche to write a blog post for you will generate some serious traffic to your pages and attract more readers. This tactic from digital marketing consultant Matthew Barby could put your blog on the map and help you establish a customer base.

Once you've established a relationship with an influencer, ask her to consider writing a regular column for your blog or a series of posts over a period of time.

6. USE LONG-TAIL KEYWORDS

Long-tail keywords are three- or four-word phrases specific to your niche. It's much easier to rank for these than regular, common keywords.

Incorporate more long-tail keywords into your blog posts for search engine optimization purposes. One study shows that long-tail keywords generate 2.5 times more conversions than other types of keywords.

7. WRITE TO YOUR PERSONA

At the basis of each and every content strategy should be a clear definition of your persona. Your content should be of interest and written in a way that your target persona will understand and relate. These seven tactics step up your blog game and turn you into a killer content creator. Still not convinced? Companies that blog have 97 percent more inbound links than those that don't, according to HubSpot. Now's a better time than any to ramp up your blogging strategy.
