So you wrote all this great content and have been posting on a regular basis. You perfectly crafted the content around your personas and goals. You researched great keywords and know a thing or two about SEO optimization.

But you haven’t seen any results.

Building a successful content marketing strategy takes time. Some studies say you can expect to see results in as little as four months, but the truth is, it really depends. It could take up to one year to reap the benefits of your efforts. Depending on your strategy and how you define results, here is an idea of what you can expect.

FIRST, YOU’LL SEE A SPIKE IN YOUR TRAFFIC

When you first start your content marketing efforts, people will begin to notice. At this point in the game, you will gain awareness and build a following. Your audience will see you as a trusted source and keep your information in the back of their minds for when it is needed. This usually results in a bump in traffic and social engagement. You’ll be able to see instant results simply because your past efforts were minimal. But this spike doesn’t typically turn into a trend.

THEN YOU’LL MOST LIKELY SEE A DROP IN YOUR TRAFFIC

After the initial bump in traffic, seeing it drop can be disheartening. However, don’t be discouraged. Spend some time reviewing what worked and what didn’t, and make some minor adjustments. Don’t do anything too drastic as you most likely do not have enough data at this point. Continue to be consistent with your content and before long, you’ll notice a steady upwards trend.

FINALLY, YOU’LL SEE AN UPWARDS TREND AND COMPOUNDED RESULTS

This upwards trend is your ultimate goal. Your efforts have resulted in improved search engine rankings, brand recognition, and traffic. Your most successful efforts will compound over time making them content gold.

At this point, you should look to see what has worked and what has not. Enough time has passed to be confident in your stats. Focus on your best content and work on distribution channels. Explore offsite content marketing or build your reputation as an industry influencer. These are both great next steps for taking your content marketing strategy to the next level.

Your content marketing strategy will have ebbs and flows. You will most likely not see instantaneous results. However, if you’re consistent, you should see your desired results in a year or less.
